Dublin Film Critics Circle first annual awards, 2006
Towards the close of 2006 a number of Ireland’s professional film writers belatedly came together to found the Dublin Film Critics Circle. The members of the DFCC, like similar bodies elsewhere in the world, seek to promote the serious consideration of cinema and, with that in mind, hope to organise a number of special events over the coming year.
The most prominent role of such circles is, however, the granting of awards to the year’s best films and to the people who made those entertainments happen. Over the last month critics from such distinguished organs as The Irish Independent, The Irish Times, The Sunday Tribune and Hot Press have bickered with one another and with prominent freelancers while preparing a definitive list of the cinematic highlights of 2006. Here it is.
Oddities of distribution have allowed Brokeback Mountain, released in 2005 in most territories and already something of a classic, to romp home as the critics’ film of the year. Yes, it was released in the first week of January.
Another notable peculiarity of the fascinating list is the extraordinary prominence of The Departed in virtually every category apart from best film. Martin Scorsese – still chasing that Oscar – was named as best director for the cool cop thriller. Leonardo DiCaprio was awarded the best actor gong and Jack Nicholson grabbed the citation for best supporting actor. Yet, the film itself just failed to make it into the pundits’ top five. Draw your own conclusions.
The intention of such critic’s polls is, however, to bring just such a singular sensibility to the otherwise predictable parade of winners during awards season. It is, thus, gratifying to see less obviously commercial pictures such as Pan’s Labyrinth and The Squid and the Whale appearing prominently in the list.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley’s victory as Best Irish Film was, however, no surprise at all. The members of the circle were delighted to grant Ken Loach’s film, a massive hit in this country, the honour, but hope that more obscure films listed in this category and elsewhere will shift a few more copies on DVD as a result of this announcement.
The awards are meant primarily as a bit of fun, but, all going well, they might do some small good as well.
